Our senior company is energetic, dynamic and fun…we specialise in Musical Theatre, so the students concentrate on singing, dancing and acting through song. Our first two weeks back were no exception, with students immediately learning two contrasting musical theatre numbers:
‘Opening Up’ from the contemporary Broadway musical ‘Waitress’
and ‘Money’ from the classic ‘Cabaret’.
The first singing session which you can see below, was great fun. Our Musical Director, Eleri Thomas, split the company into 4 sections to achieve an immediate 4 part harmony. They were already sounding great and this was only the first rehearsal. Learning the vocals for ‘Opening Up’ from ‘Waitress’
Next step was to add in the choreography or should we say ‘Tray-ography’…..but we won’t give too much away at this stage! Learning the moves for ‘Opening Up’ from ‘Waitress’
The teaching of ‘Money’ required a totally different approach and in true Musicality style, Company Principal, Amanda Murphy, revealed the new number by telling the students a creepy story as they lay in the dark! (This alone was quite an experience!) When the company realised what the song was, they went mad with excitement and were soon up on their feet to try out the ‘Fosse’ inspired choreography. Vocally, the company are split into 2 parts for this number, but with all the moves that they need to remember this is no bad thing!
